Lilac Alpine Onion is a lesser known perennial herb
with flowers borne in hemispherical umbels, 2-3 cm across. Tepals are
oval, 6-8 mm long, lilac or reddish, pointed. Filaments are longer than
the tepals, inner with 2 teeth at the base of each. Style is
thread-like, protruding. Bulb is ovoid, 2-3 cm long, outer coats
membranous-scarious, reddish-brown. Flowering stem is 20-40 cm tall,
base covered with leaf bases. Leaves are 1-3, linear, 1-2 mm broad,
grooved, not fistular. Its leaves and inflorescences are used
by local people for seasoning dishes. Lilac Alpine Onion is found in
Afghanistan, Himalayas, Pakistan and Western Himalaya, at altitudes of
2000-3200 m.
Medicinal uses: Bulbs are also consumed for
getting relief from headache. In addition, bulbs are given to horses
for relief from colic pain.
